How to Extend Your Wireless Signal?

There are many “dead zones” in the house where you don’t get wifi signals from the main router. However, you don’t have always have to buy a new router to extend the range of your router. An easy way to solve this issue is to get a wireless range extender. The range of the wireless extenders won’t be as good as the main router but they do help. One potential issue with using a range extender is that they create a separate network.

What’s the Best DD-WRT Router?

DD-WRT is actually an open source firmware which can be installed on a router. This firmware enhances the performance and increases the functionality of the router.

However, do keep in mind that many of the router manufacturers do not recommend this and installing this firmware can also void your warranty.

Advantages that installing DD-WRT can add:

  • VPN
  • Network Printer
  • NAS
  • DNS Caching
  • Quality of Service
  • Kai Daemon
  • Advance Performance Graphs
  • Wireless Bridging
  • Adjust Antenna Power
  • Analytics & Tweaking
  • AD-Blocking
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot Management

What’s the best router for gaming?

Getting a good router is one of the best ways to boost your gaming experience. We recommend the Asus AC2900 for most gamers.

Key features of a good gaming router:

  • Configuration Options: This is a big feature to consider; You could prioritize gaming ahead of other activities (such as Netflix), so you are sure you’re getting the top gaming experience possible.
  • Range: When shopping for gaming routers, make sure to get a router with the greatest range possible.
  • Signal strength: You’d want to see the lowest amount of pings while gaming. All of these routers provide excellent signal strength.
  • Price: The routers we recommend are not cheap but if you have a lower budget, you could easily get yourself a good router at lower price for a slightly lower performance.

How do routers work?

Routers are essentially just packet-switching devices. IP (Internet protocol) technology breaks data into “packets” containing address information.

Each packet, whether outgoing or incoming, is forwarded to the correct destination IP address in use by a particular computer, smartphone, or another device.

A router handles one packet at a time (in a fraction of a second).

Network activity may involve thousands of packets going to multiple addresses, so those coded packets are reassembled into usable information at a target device with a wireless adapter. A wireless router, therefore, includes a network switch and wireless access points (antennae).

Types of routers

  • Dual-band routers are the cheapest and most common, providing both a 2.4GHz (gigahertz) band (radio frequency) and a 5GHz band.
  • Tri-band routers have an additional 5GHz band and are a fairly new technology. Bear in mind that the second 5GHz channel is only used when it’s necessary.
  • N600 designs have a total 600Mbps (megabits per second) data transfer rate split between the 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands. These may be inadequate in modern networks.
  • N900 routers are an updated version giving a combined 900Mbps data rate.

“AC” designates the modern (2013) radio standard 802.11ac.

This includes:

  • AC1750 offers a theoretical maximum speed of 1750Mbps: 450 to the 2.4GHz band and 1300 to the 5GHz.
  • AC1900 – a higher speed of 600Mpbs on the 2.4GHz band.
  • AC3200 offers 600Mpbs on the 2.4GHz band but 2600Mbps split between two 5GHz bands.
  • AC5300 are the latest and fastest with a total speed of 5300Mbps. There are currently few client devices that can match this data rate.

What’s a Wi-Fi Mesh Network Systems?

A Wi-Fi Mesh network system is a communication network that creates a wireless ad hoc network. It creates a mesh by interconnecting several devices and nodes. This can be made up of clients, gateways and routers. These radio nodes are used to cover large areas and create a robust network.

Difference between Single Band, Dual-Band or Tri-Band routers?

Routers deal with the sending and receiving of data over “bands.” The first and most basic band is broadcast at 2.4 GHz. This is what all standard single bad routers use. In a dual band and try band router, an additional band of 5 GHZ is produced allowing for more devices to be used with less interference. While a dual band has a single 2.4 GHz band and a single 5.0 GHz band, the tri-band has 2 5.0 GHz bands.

What’s the A, B, G, N, AC wireless standards?

The standards created for improving and stabilizing network throughput. A and G were the first and most outdated speed and transmission capabilities. The newer standards are able to transmit on much broader and strengthened frequencies. The standards also increased throughput and security measures that allow for more use in public areas.

What are some Security aspects of wireless routers?

There are several steps to take to ensure your security is up to date and working on your router. From changing the default password once it is setup, to creating a firewall, and filtering a MAC address, there are several steps to take to secure your router. Another newer feature is to see if the firmware on your router can self update. Having the newest firmware is the best option to ensure backdoors are secured and your router is not unprotected.

What’s Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) and Security?

This service was created and introduced in 2006 to allow for those who have little IT experience and still wish to create a secure home network. This protocol creates new standards and makes it easier to add new devices to an existing network without a hassle. However, a major security issue was discovered several years later basically allowing hackers to brute force their way into a router and steal data.

How do I change my wireless password?

It is rather easy to change a password on a router. All you need is a computer and some basic information. First, you open the router configuration page and find your router. In the wireless section choose the change password function. When you do this make sure you have changed and secured your security type and network name. Once this is done, save your changes and you will be more secure. Just remember not to use a simple password like password or 1234.

What Do Ethernet Ports Do?

Ethernet ports are designed to bridge the gap between your outside internet signal and different devices. This allows for more stable internet connections as opposed to wireless broadband. Most devices have 4 ports that allow for several devices to be plugged in and receive internet. These ports essentially turn the router into an internet splitter allowing for more than one device to connect to your internet.

Are there any reasons for me to buy a standalone router?

One of the best reasons to buy a standalone router as opposed to getting an all-in-one device modem/router combination is more control. Not only does this give you more access controlling who accesses your internet and settings, the ability to upgrade is significantly easier when using individual routers. Also, this allows for less interactions and down time from your Internet Service Provider.

USB ports allow for added functionality on your router and modems. Wired ports allow for the ability to have a secure internet signal between devices. Antennas have several different types used to convert electronic signals into electromagnetic waves readable by the devices. MIMO refers to the antenna tech that turns antennas into both transmitters and receivers. This allows for minimization of errors and optimizing data speeds. IPV6 is the most recent version of what’s known as the Internet Protocol. This essentially allows for devices to create physical addresses so they know where to send data between locations.

Is there a limit to how many computers and other devices can connect to the internet at one time with a wireless router?

Most individual routers can have approximately 250 connected devices. However, in reality, this number of connected devices will severely limit your access speeds and connectivity. Most routers start to dip in performance after 4 or 5 devices are connected. Any more devices connected at the same time will result in drastically reduced speeds as the router struggles to maintain it’s connections.

Should I turn my router off when I’m not using it?

Other than when going away for long periods of time, home networks and routers do not need to be shut down. Repeatedly cycling devices like routers on and off actually reduces it’s overall battery life and will cause you to replace it more frequently. However, if you’re going on vacation, it might be a good idea to turn off the router to make sure your network is secure while you’re gone.

What is the best Wi-Fi security option for you?

The best security options for a home Wi-Fi network is a WPA Protected Access key. These create a password that is much harder to be guessed or brute forced because it is not based on traditional methods of personally created passwords. These are secured but not the most secure. For those who need to have the latest and greatest security measures in place, Temporal Key Integrity Protocols and Advanced Encryption Standards are the best. Both have different uses and offer differing levels of security.

How can I block “specific users” from accessing “specific sites”, when they connect through my wireless router?

The default software available provided with a router usually doesn’t allow for the blocking of websites to individual users. In order to do that, third party software is needed to create a sort of bridge in the router and the internet service. Some devices support the integration of third party software but some does not. Be aware that this also creates an intrusion and gap in security that can be accessed by malicious threats.

Is the internet faster with a wireless n router than with a wireless g router?

Internet is faster by almost double on a wireless N router than with a wireless G router.

Is it possible to daisy chain wireless routers?

Yes it is possible to extend a wireless network by daisy chaining routers. It includes several technical steps that should be researched extensively before put into use.

Is it OK to reset a wireless router frequently?

It is not a good idea to reset a router frequently as it shortens the overall life span of a device. You can reset after power loss if need be, but it is better to not reset whenever possible.

Can you connect a wireless router to another wireless router?

Yes you can connect routers to another router. This results in a cascading and connecting effect which essentially allows you to extend a network’s effective area tremendously. Be aware that the steps in order to do so are quite technical.

How do I use a wireless router as an adapter?

To use a wireless router as an adapter requires the use of third-party software that essentially makes the wireless router act as another Ethernet port. When you do this, it allows more devices to be on a network and not have to worry about having a wireless network card for each device.

What’s the optimal placement for a wireless router?

A central location of a home or office is the best place to position a wireless router. Place it as high as possible and avoid any bricks, concrete walls or metallic objects. These items interfere with the signal and will effectively choke off your internet. For more vertical reach, place the antenna in a vertical position. Do the same thing horizontally for more horizontal spreading of the signal.

How do you set up a wireless router without a cable modem?

It’s possible to set up a network for all devices to connect to each other and communicate back and forth but in order to access the internet you need to have a cable modem. Setting up a non-internet network is very similar to how to set up an internet based network. Essentially you just have to plug the router into a wall socket and turn it on to create a wireless network. Any devices connected wirelessly or via Ethernet ports can communicate with the others.

How many Devices can be connected to a wireless router?

Theoretically, as many as 250 devices can be connected to a single wireless router.

Can you track a wireless router?

Sometimes an app on a cell phone, can allow you to remotely trace where a signal is coming from, but there is no way to physically pinpoint without knowing where an actual router is located.

How do I find out my wireless router’s password?

Open up the router configuration software on a computer that has connected to the router. There is no way to recover a password that has been forgotten. The only way to recover the password or change it then is to rest the router to factory default settings and use the default password.

How do I use a wireless router as a switch?

You can use an Ethernet cable and a computer with an Ethernet jack to create a switch where you will be able use multiple devices on one Ethernet cable.

What is the typical range of a wireless router?

Indoors, the range is about 150 feet, or 46 meters. Outdoors because there is less interference, the distance is almost 30 feet or 92 meters.

What is the overlapping channel in a wireless router?

Essentially overlapping channels allow for less interference. By causing signals to transmit on certain channels, the interference can be minimized and more data can be transmitted securely.

Why won’t my wireless router connect to the internet?

In order to connect a wireless router to the internet, a cable modem is needed to pull the internet signal in from a service provider and allow for access. Without a cable modem, a wireless router can only create a wireless network among devices.

Can a wireless router be considered as a relay?

Yes it can be used a relay with some technical know-how and third party software.

Do Wireless Routers Support Hybrid Networks?

Wireless routers do in fact support hybrid networks, but broadband routers that lack Wi-Fi capability do not.

How do I find out what speeds I am receiving for my Internet connection?

First, turn off any device that produces wireless interference, like TVs, video game systems, cell phones, etc. Then using a computer, you can check your internet speed using any number of websites. The best website to use would be your own internet service providers. This will allow you to get the best and most realistic picture.

What does WiFi stand for?

Most people assume it refers to “wireless fidelity”, and in part it does, but it’s technically just a term invented for the outdated 802.11b wireless standard.

What is NAS?

This is short for “network attached storage”, which means connecting an external hard drive via USB 3.0 to access digital files such as video or music.

What should I look for in a wireless router?

In modern routers, you should expect an easy user interface (UI) to manage the device, a printer connection (USB 2.0), and useful features like parental control, network prioritization, and security.

They also come with the ability to handle data backup, and technologies like DLNA, QoS, WPS, and Beamforming. (As mentioned before, the best wireless router we choose for you has the best value for money. )

What is DLNA?

Digital Living Network Alliance technology lets you control how information is used on your network.

What is QoS?

The quality of Service is a technology that lets you prioritize data streams to preserve bandwidth for critical operations.

What is WPS?

Wi-Fi Protected Setup is an easier way to connect a WPS-enabled client without having to type in passwords.

What is Beamforming?

This is a technology that allows you to focus wireless signals in order to minimize signal loss over distance.

Many devices today are Wi-Fi compatible. Getting these devices to communicate requires a wireless router. The right choice comes down to your needs and budget.

1. Google WiFi System – Our Pick & Amazon Bestseller

Google is known for making many products these days. Hence, it does not come as much surprise that they made a WiFi router. This system replaces typical WiFi routers to avoid creating dead zones and buffering situations. An option exists for connecting to the nearest and clearest channel available. It works on an app that can overlook the goings on with individual devices on the system, meaning that parents can stop children from certain sites remotely.

A single point covers up to 1500 square feet on its own. However, up to two other points can be added, which expands connectivity to 4500 square feet in total. For larger houses and apartment complexes, this connectivity system is ideal. Instead of fighting for control over who has access to the most powerful points of access, families and renters can share access more easily and evenly.

This model comes with advanced software options that work seamlessly in the background. This Network Assist works in the background, meaning users do not have to fiddle with it often. At the same time, they can easily interact with the Network Assist through a smartphone app. This app allows users to prioritize devices on the network, and they can even ban certain devices altogether. This feature is great to have for when neighbors try to jump onto connections without permission ahead of time to do so.

As mentioned previously, the app allows parents to control what their children do and do not have access to. However, they can also control what times of day their children have access to the internet. Therefore, children will not be able to spend all night on their devices without parental permission. Such features alone make Google’s model the best WiFi router for home use.

2. ASUS RT-AC88U – Excellent Router With Stunning Design.

Asus is known for a little flair in its designs, and the AC88U is no exception. A gold logo and some diamond-shaped patterns are immediately noticeable on what is a very compact router for its abilities at roughly 6x8x3 inches.

One awkward element is a fixed stand, which may be for ventilation reasons, but it would be nice to have options.

Indicator lights across the front for the WAN and 4 LAN ports, power, Wi-Fi, etc. show a solid blue when active. Both of the USB ports can support external drives and be used for failover, as well as printers and mobile devices.

This also utilizes the Broadcom wireless controller and TurboQAM for throughput on both channels.

The AC88U comes with a Quick Start Guide to lead you through the setup. This opens when you connect a LAN port from a computer and launch a Web browser. The Quick Internet Setup Wizard walks you through the process, with no surprises. The AC88U automatically detects your WAN connection, sets the SSIDs, encryption level, and so on for the 2.4 band, which you have the option of copying over to the 5GHz. All you have to do is supply the passwords.

Asus has one of the best UI out there. It’s uncluttered and easy to navigate, with a high-tech look that almost feels like playing a game. The homepage shows router information for the network, such as active devices, WAN status, and other details. There’s also a handy network map with each device name and IP address. Parental controls, QoS, firewall, and other settings can be done through the UI. In parental controls, for instance, you can set time limits or block sites by keyword. You can also download the AiCloud service to manage USB devices through iOS or Android smartphones.

The AC88U has great range and throughput. It also has a nice interface and enough manageable features that it’s perfectly suited to a small business as well as a home network. If your old dual-band router has had some tricky coverage issues, the AC88U would be a great upgrade.

This is the “Overall Best Router” without considering the price. You couldn’t ask for a better router at this level.

  • Smartly designed and easy to use Web interface
  • speedy Wi-Fi performance
  • Excellent scores on 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz throughput tests
  • Excellent range
  • Advanced features
  • 8 Gigabit LAN ports
  • Easy set up

  • Poor placing of the USB 3.0
  • NAS is just average.
  • Pricey

3. D-Link AC3200 – Best Long Range Router.

The D-Link AC3200 has an eye-catching design that seems to present a sci-fi drone in stunning fire-engine red. And it deserves the attention as a fast, easy to use, and extremely stable Wi-Fi router.

It also functions smoothly as NAS device with an attached external drive. The D-Link AC3200 is among the best wireless routers today.

If you live in a small home and have limited Wi-Fi devices to connect, the DIR-890 might be excessive, but at least you won’t be disappointed with its performance. In fact, you’ll probably be thrilled.

It’s bigger than most routers at roughly 15x10x5 inches, and with 6 antennae, it might take up some room. The antennae are not detachable so they can’t be upgraded to improve range. But since they do use Beamforming, you shouldn’t need to, not for the average home network.
Read More (Click to Expand)

Installation is very easy with the DIR-890 since it comes pre-configured with a WiFi network name and password. All you have to do is plug in, connect to an Internet device, and open a browser to launch the setup wizard. This walks you through the installation process, and you can reconnect to it at any time by pointing a browser to the router’s default IP address (you might want to change the network name and password!). You can even re-install by returning to the Settings menu.

This is done via the same Web interface. It has a new look, grouped by 4 category buttons: Home, Settings, Features, and Management, rather than the old granular menu options. Mousing over Home brings up a network map, while any of the other buttons pull up a drop-down menu. The interactive network map enables users to click on any device to access details and settings. It also has a nice QoS feature which allows for drag-and-drop. This UI is a little easier and more intuitive, allowing quick access to any settings. However, it doesn’t allow the same detail advanced users might like.

This is one of the fastest routers out there, though it tends to slow down notably outside a range of about 100 feet. But your physical environment may have less interference. The DIR-890 has great Wi-Fi stability, and can take several days of heavy network throughput without a disconnect. As a fast tri-band router it should perform admirably for even busy wireless networks.

The D-Link AC3200 is the Best Long Range Router. It has fast WiFi and network storage speeds and an eye-catching design, and is very easy to use. On the whole, the new interface is better for home users who want something simpler.

5. NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 – Best Wifi Router Under $150

Netgear’s R7000 offers home users a lot of performance from a mid-level router. A dual-core processor operates at 1GHz, making it one of the fastest routers around.

It also offers some features that weren’t previously available, such as a built-in VPN server, support of the faster Broadcom TurboQAM, and 3rd-party firmware like DD-WRT.

Add an external hard drive, and it’s ready for Time Machine backup. The USB 3.0 port is at the front of the router for quick attachment of the drive.

The R7000 is bulky as home routers go, even down to its power adaptor. So it will take up some room even if it’s wall-mounted. The 3 detachable antennae take up even more room. But it’s a bargain in home routers. A bigger footprint is part of the new design approach moving away from upright routers to flat models. Despite a smudge-free plastic body, it still feels solid and ruggedly well-constructed.
Read More (Click to Expand)

As in past Netgear routers, setup is a breeze. The R7000 ships with its network name and password on the affixed label. This applies to the 2.4GHz channel, but the 5GHz band just gets the “-5G” suffix. Use the network cable that’s included to hook up your Internet, power up the router, and follow the Web Genie interface to complete the installation. If you lose the label, you can get the same info from the Genie site.

From the Web UI, you can customize router settings. This is accessible anytime just by pointing a computer browser to the default IP address of the router ( There’s a generic default log-in so you might want to change that. There is also a mobile version of Netgear Genie for iOS and Android. The Web version is much more comprehensive, though the mobile version is more convenient.

The R7000 meets and exceeds the capabilities of previous models. It supports virtually all Wi-Fi client products. You still get 1.3Gps speed on the 5GHz channel, but 600 on the 2.4GHz band thanks to the TurboQAM. Of course, the client also has to be TurboQAM-compatible. 256MB of RAM and 128GB of flash storage round out some impressive hardware.

  • Excellent performance on the 5 gigahertz band
  • Fast peak throughput
  • Sleek design and Excellent built quality
  • Solid network storage capability
  • Excellent feature set
  • Efficient NAS server

  • 2.4 gigahertz band might not perform that well.
  • Relatively bulky

6. NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 – Best Wifi Router For Gaming.

The R8000 surpasses the excellent R7000 in many ways, such as a more innovative design and greater bandwidth. It looks meaner, larger, and in black it’s bug-shape seems more aggressive and robust. At the time of publishing, the Nighthawk X6 AC3200 is one of the best wi-fi routers online.

But it’s actually more compact since it now has fold-down antennae. These antennae swivel and are retractable, allowing you to position all 6 as needed to maximize signals.

Functionally, it’s similar to its predecessor with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, a 1 Gigabit WAN port, and the expected pair of USB ports at the back.

In a vertical stripe across the center top is an array of indicator lights- the R8000 actually has a little switch so you can turn them off if they become a distraction. It also has good ventilation and runs cool.

It is the best wireless router for gaming and video streaming. It handles so many devices so well that if you really have a complex or legacy-laden Wi-Fi network, the X6 will take it all in stride.
Read More (Click to Expand)

The R8000 comes with default Wi-Fi settings out of the box. These allow you to plug it in and go to work in moments without specific configuration. If you accept these settings, you’ll have no problems. But at some point, you’re going to want to change them, at least for security reasons. You can connect to a simple Web-based UI that lays everything out in a simple, easy-to-follow format.

However, the R8000 has limited Wi-Fi settings. You can make them operate only up to specific limits, although you would naturally pick the highest setting. What’s more, there’s no more Auto mode, so you have to pick the channel for each access point. There are only 4 channels available for each band, which is probably to ensure they don’t interfere with each other. While there is no doubt logic to it, it does complicate things.

The R8000 is a little faster than the R7000 at close range, but actually slower if you get far enough away, indicating some signal loss. But it’s much better as a NAS server, even rivaling the read/write speeds of machines designed for the task. The X6 hardware includes a dual-core 1GHz processor with three offload processors, 256MB of RAM, and 128MB of flash memory. So while it’s not the fastest router out there, it’s plenty fast enough, considering the real point of a tri-band is to handle many different devices- which the X6 does well.

  • Tri-band operations, good performance
  • Robust hardware
  • High Wi-Fi data rates on the 5Ghz band
  • Strong performance as a NAS
  • Simple setup
  • Six fold-out antennas
  • Excellent for multiple devices
  • Runs cool

  • Could use some better configuration UIs
  • Lacks enhanced QoS feature
  • Pricey

7. ASUS RT-AC5300 Wireless AC5300 – Best Wifi Router Under $500

The design has both good and bad aspects. The router is a little large but still limited to the standard 4 Gigabit LAN ports and single Gigabit WAN port.

A mostly-open bottom and additional ventilation grilles help to keep it cool. A little higher clearance beneath, and a geometric design on top make it seem a little more stylish than previous versions.

Like other Asus routers of this generation, it supports solid AiProtection for security and the excellent Web UI Asus provides.

The two (3.0 and 2.0) USB ports can also host a cellular dongle to share 3G or 4G networks with your clients. Unfortunately, it does not come with wall mount slots, and the LED indicator lights on the front are only marked with little gray icons that can be hard to see in dim light.

The RT-AC5300 comes with 8 detachable antennae, which is the most you’ll find on a home router. These antennae do have some plastic parts, which looks interesting but adds weight that can make the antennae fall over. This could get irritating if it happens a lot, but you should still get decent signals most of the time, and they are replaceable.

It’s a beast of a router more suited to small businesses, so you can count on a great performance and blazing speed for most home networks. However, we do not recommend this for the average consumer.

Getting setup up is easy with Asus’ Web-based UI wizard. If you want wired connection, you can use any of the 4 Ethernet ports. If you have a fast Internet connection, you can use link aggregation for accelerated data transfers. There’s a healthy amount of RAM (512MB) and the usual 128MB flash memory to ensure throughput is handled smoothly.

Monitoring and configuring the router is also easily accomplished through the Web UI. The RT-AC5300 supports virtually all Wi-Fi clients, including legacy 802.11b devices. The best performance comes with newer tech, and of course, maximum throughput requires devices that can handle the same data transfer speeds. The RT-AC5300 is also optimized to support a range of gaming hardware, including mobile devices, PCs, and consoles. It will also support any devices running Windows, Mac, or Linux OSs.

Asus’ RT-AC5300 will likely be more powerful than the typical home network requires. This router has better specs all around than the previous AC-3200 model. It boasts the advanced 1.4GHz dual-core processor, USB data transfers of 100Mbps or more, and router throughput up to 1800Mbps. The Broadcom chipset gives the 2.4GHz band speeds of 1Gbps and the 5GHz bands a little over 2Gps. That’s a lot of bandwidth even for streaming video, and as a true tri-band router it can support all the devices you care to add.[/su_tab][/su_tabs]

  • Incredible top speeds
  • Easily supports multiple devices
  • Excellent Asus interface
  • Wide device compatibility
  • Plenty of media server features
  • Very good range
  • Easy setup

  • Slow USB 3.0 performance

NETGEAR Orbi Home WiFi System

For families in need of a bit more coverage, NETGEAR offers a 5000 square foot radius on their AC3000 model. It comes with an extension to help keep power strong throughout the entire house. Unlike other models, this one is compatible with Amazon’s Alexa. At the same time, the AC3000 does not tank in speed when new devices come onto the connection. Instead, signals remain strong for hours at a time. For people who want the best WiFi router for long range, they do not need to look any further than NETGEAR’s model.

Users can also access this connection while roaming from one room to another. It also supports Mac and PC based devices with ease. The network can be established under one name and one password. If a user does not want to give out their connection information, then they can set up a guest network instead. Furthermore, an account does not need to be set up and linked to the system in order to manage it. This feature is great in comparison to the fact that it operates on a plug and plays set up.

TP-Link AD7200 Wireless Wi-Fi Tri-Band Gigabit Router

TP-Link offers yet another tri-band router that works similarly to NETGEAR’s setup. Even when more devices come to use the wireless internet, connection to all devices remains smooth and clear for all users. It allows for 4-stream technology as it promotes up to 7200 Mbps speeds. This basic speed can be gained at only 2.4 GHz, and the more GHz used means, the higher the Mbps will be.

Much of the support for this model’s speed comes from the use of MU-MIMO technology. IT operates on 512 MB of ram and 32 MB of flash memory. For LAN connections, it provides 4x Gigabits, but it only offers 1x Gigabits of WAN connections.

This model comes equipped with two USB 3.0 ports. Furthermore, it has a total of eight antennas, but they are permanently fixed. Therefore, rearranging antennas to fix reception in other rooms cannot be done. On the other hand, the two other devices powering the network negate the need to move the antennas at all because of how they expand the network.

TP-Link’s model also comes with a dual-core CPU that runs on 1.4 GHz to balance out the demands that other devices place on the system. This CPU guarantees that connections remain even and fast on as many devices as possible while not sacrificing speed over all. With four streams per band, users can stream videos or play video games without bothering anyone else on the network. This router is also the first of its kind to support 802.44ad, which is the fastest wireless technology currently on the market.

TP-Link AC1900 Long Range Wireless Wi-Fi Router

TP-Link offers another model with their AC1900 router. This model also promotes three, dual band antennas that can detach from the base. Such features allow for better signal direction and control overall. It also supports 802.11ac speeds and connectivity. For people who like to stream 4K HD videos while other members of the household play video games, they will not be disappointed. Connectivity smoothly evens out between different devices to share the load.

The dual band networks operate at both 2.4GHz or 600 Mbps and 5.0GHz or 1300Mbps. It will also locate wireless devices on its own through the beamforming technology offered as part of the package. The dual-core processor operates on 1.0Ghz of power in order to handle both wired and wireless connections without much problem or strain. Hence, interruptions in connectivity become minimized over time.

The AC1900 offers four Gigabit Ethernet ports and one Gigabit WAN connection port. Furthermore, it has one USB 3.0 port and one USB 2.0 port. In addition to all of these connection options, users can go through the QoS system and give priority to certain devices and activities over others, which means that lag will not become a problem for users during video gaming sessions. Additionally, this model offers 533 percent more throughput than previous TP-Link models.

Synology RT2600AC Wi-Fi AC 2600 Gigabit Router

For people seeking a dual-core processor with a bit more power, they should consider Synology’s RT2600AC model. It operates on a processor that is 1.7GHz in size, so it operates fast and does not compromise performance in the long run. Furthermore, it provides two radio waves for connection purposes, each of which operates on 4×4 802.11ac connections. At the same time, it provides MU-MIMO technology with up to 2.53Gbps breakthrough speeds.

In instances where users want to transition between speed and range, they can use the Smart connect feature. The hardware on this model also accelerates between seven layers of traffic control and monitoring. For the sake of balancing loads and providing failover support, this model comes with dual WAN capabilities. Such intelligent management tools can hardly be found elsewhere on other models.

Additionally, it also features beamforming technology to help with finding devices for connection purposes more easily. The setup for this system is a bit more simplistic than it is on other models, especially considering it does not need a private account established just for connection purposes. The Synology Router Manager system is to thank for all of this simple running usages.

Parents will find this product especially helpful in controlling what websites their children can and cannot access. Potentially harmful sites can be blocked with a few clicks of the mouse and without intense programming. For example, parents can allow their children access to YouTube, but they can block social media sites from home use altogether. This function relies on creating separate profiles for each person in the house, which might take some time. However, the time investment is more than worth it to keep children away from the harmful content.

Starry Station – Touchscreen WiFi Router

For parents wanting, even more, control over what their children can and cannot do online at home, Starry Station comes into play. This model offers a touch-screen appearance that parents can use with the press of a button to turn connectivity off to certain devices altogether. Parent controls are easy to set up in the long run. Instead of blocking one device altogether, they can also block certain sites from access at home completely. Once more, social media does not pose a problem at home.

This model also marks the best router for gaming, too. Users can dedicate resources on the connection to specific devices by turning off other options. With this arrangement, lag does not have to be a problem ever again in the future as connection speeds can be dedicated to one device at a time. The only downside to this model is the fact that people have to access the router in person in order to turn connections on and off instead of reverting to an app on their phones and tablets.

Linksys WRT AC3200 Open Source Dual-Band Gigabit Smart Wireless Router

Linksys has been one of the more trusted names in internet connectivity over the past few decades. Their WRT AC3200 model proves they have come a long way. It allows users access to a tri-stream 160 technology that allows for double the bandwidth of other models. Furthermore, it operates on MU-MIMO technology to keep speeds as fast as possible across multiple devices. For people who prefer open-source technology, this option is the best one. In short, it is the best WiFi router for long-range connectivity available.

Parents do not have to worry about what their children watch on their devices in the future, either. This model comes with a Smart app to monitor usage from anywhere. Hence, they do not need to worry about what goes on their children’s screens when they are not at home.

Speeds of access on this model include 256 Flash and 512 RAM in order to keep data delivery speeds even across multiple devices. Restricted channels can be accessed at full bandwidth with the clearest WiFi available, which cannot be done on most other models. Every type of device can connect to this router, including wireless printers and USB hard drives through eSATA connections.

Linksys AC1750 Dual-Band Smart Wireless Router

Another model worth considering by Linksys is the AC1750. The company considers this WiFi router to be among models that use Next-Generation AC standards, mostly because of how it utilizes multi-user MIMO technology. The dual band speeds on this model rank around 1.7Gbps, making it one of the most powerful speeds on the market.

As with other models considered thus far, the AC1750 also uses beamforming technology to focus speed toward individual devices on the network. This situation happens without sacrificing speed to other models. At the same time, it operates on a Smart app that can be accessed from any location through a mobile device. Therefore, parents and homeowners can prevent their WiFi from being accessed by anyone without having to be at home.

Linksys considers this model to be their maximum streaming option, which makes it great for people who prefer to play online video games from either a computer of a console. With this router, lag will not be an issue. Much the same can be said about buffering with live stream videos on applications like Hulu.

Linksys Velop Tri-band Whole Home WiFi Mesh Node

The third Linksys model on this list considers tri-band technology as a second nature function. It looks like a node, resembling the Apple AirPort in some ways. Likewise, it does not take up to much room on a desktop so that it can blend into the background with ease. Despite its small size, this model will fill any home from wall to wall with internet capabilities without sacrificing bandwidth or speed. In fact, it covers up to 2000 square feet.

Once more, this model comes with the Smart app provided for all Linksys models that can be accessed from anywhere. Yet again, parents and other users control who does and does not have access to their internet from any location, so long as the app can access the internet in some way. Sites can be programmed for avoidance, keeping social media sites away from home use at all times possible.

Furthermore, guest networks can be established. So, parents and users do not have to give out their private internet information every time someone comes to visit. This feature will also make sure that neighbors cannot access home networks without prior permission. At the same time, the main network can remain hidden from unauthorized users at all times.

Linksys AC1900 Dual Band Wireless Router

The Linksys AC1900 continues with the same performance as the other models in the Linksys empire. It operates on dual band technology and Next Generation AC Wi-Fi. Furthermore, it comes with MU-MIMO to keep connection speeds consistent along multiple devices without sacrificing speed and connection strength. For gamers, this model is one of the better options for that very reason.

At the same time, movie lovers can make use of 4K HD streaming without having to worry about competing with other users in the house. With the use of Gigabit power, most transfer speeds operate at ten times faster than Ethernet alone.

This model comes with three, external antennas that can be redirected as needed to control where the signal goes throughout a house. Unlike the node model, this control is paramount to avoiding dead spaces and high-intensity buffer zones in other areas of the home. It can fill a medium-sized home without needing any extender as well.

Setting up this model is rather easy. Network names and passwords can be assigned remotely through the Smart Wi-Fi software provided with the Linksys family. The bandwidth for this model operates on 1.9 Gbps, which means it can support up to 12 devices at one time.

ASUS RT-ACRH13 Dual-Band 2×2 AC1300 WiFi 4-port Gigabit Router

For users wanting the best router under 100 dollars, the RT-ARCH13 by ASUS is one of the better options available. This price is not a sale listing, either. It always marks at a price point under 100 dollars. Hence, users on a budget do not need to worry about breaking the bank with this purchase.

Even though the price point on this model is lower than previous ones on the list, it does not sacrifice speed and connectivity in the process. It comes with 2×2 dual band projection with four antennas. These antennas can be redirected to any area of a home to avoid creating dead zones where buffering might be a problem.

Once more, a Smart app comes with this router to monitor and control which devices can have access to the network. Devices can be kicked from the network, or some sites can be blocked altogether. The web-based interface runs at fast speeds that are compatible with 802.11ac. Speeds come upwards of 867 Mbps or 5 GHz in total. At 2.4 GHz, it provides speeds of 400 Mbps. Furthermore, it offers integrated USB 3.0 ports as well.

The Asus RT-AC3200 is a solid performer with excellent hardware. It comes with some helpful features, good security, and acts admirably as a VPN or NAS server.

It measures up well against tri-band routers from Netgear and Linksys, proving that it’s a fine choice for homes with heavy Wi-Fi needs.

But the RT-AC3200 has a few features that set it apart. Among these are Asus’ robust Web UI that looks and feels somewhat like a video game, making it almost fun to configure a router.

It can handle multiple Internet connections at the same time and has built-in VPN features along with good monitoring tools, which make it suitable for small business.

The RT-AC3200 doesn’t disappoint. It’s big, with 6 detachable antennae, but has the usual complement of 4 Gigabit LAN ports and one Gigabit WAN (Internet) port on the back panel. The USB 3.0 port is on the front while the 2.0 stays in the back.

The RT-AC3200 involves the same easy setup you expect of Asus routers. Just plug in the router and point a Web browser at the router’s default IP address to bring up an UI with an easy-to-follow installation wizard. At the end, you need to create passwords for both the UI and your Wi-Fi networks. Smart Connect is on by default and will combine all three bands into one network. You will have to manually change these into three separate networks if desired.

You can go back to the Web UI to alter settings, customize features, or manage router operation. The UI is well-organized, including a network map that lets you interact with your devices in real time. You can also customize the router from the same map, including DNS, Wi-Fi settings, the Internet, etc. Everything should be intuitive and/or clearly explained. It includes a new Adaptive QoS, alongside a Traditional QoS to define your own rules.

The RT-AC3200 has data rates better than average, but it’s real strength comes from it’s ability to handle multiple high-bandwidth clients at the same time for hours without a hiccup. Since this is what it’s meant to do, it performs extremely well. It also has an effective range of around 200 feet, which is excellent.

If you really need to handle many data clients, and are ready to explore the RT-AC3200’s feature-rich UI, than this router will be a great investment.

  • High storage throughput
  • Good range
  • More bandwidth monitoring features
  • OpenVPN and PPTP server capability
  • Reliable signal

  • Poor documentation included

Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station

For users who prefer to use Apple products, they are in luck. Apple produces the AirPort Extreme Base Station wireless router. However, people who prefer to use PC products might be at a loss with this router as they will not be able to connect to it as easily. It does operate on 802.11ac connectivity, but it can be upgraded to 802.11a and 802.11b options. One of the downsides with this model is a cable modem has to be purchased as part of a separate kit to keep it running smoothly.

Apple’s model only measures 6.6 inches in height and 3.85 inches at the base, which means it will not take up as much room as other models looked at so far. It does include six antennas to amplify the connection more. Setting up a Mac and iOS device on the connection is easy and happens without much problem.

Furthermore, this model simultaneously offers dual-band support at 802.11ac support. It can transmit frequencies at 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz at the same time. Considering this model marks the sixth generation of the AirPort, Apple has taken considerable time and effort to make improvements over the last model. Hence, this one operates at far faster speeds and promotes even usage between devices.

With this design comes a vertical height instead of horizontal bases. Therefore, the device promotes better connectivity and range with this design. Additionally, it measures 64 percent smaller than the previous model, which is great for streamlining the use of space around the router.

Final Words

Getting the best wireless router for your network needs is never easy, as there is such a wide variety of routers out there, and new WiFi client devices are constantly appearing.

But this list should give you a good sampling of what kind of routers are out there and what they can do.

Each router review on the list is based on the responses of other consumers, and these 10 are some of the most popular and highly rated. Especially if you’re new to Wi-Fi networks, they are a good start in router shopping.

  8. Please can you recommend a reasonable router for someone that lives in a U-shaped house and needs to get WiFi from one point of the U to the other. My aim is actually a router that will be able to push a signal through two external cinder block walls. The distance from point to point, in a straight line, is probably around 20 ft.

  9. Great information here! But I was wondering about routers handling multiple consoles at the same time. For example, too many routers don’t give open NATs to everyone trying to use their own xbox one at the same time, or in my case, everyone has an Open NAT yet voices still aren’t fully working.
So any recommendations for a router that won’t flinch at multiple xbox one, consoles fighting to use the same ports at the same time AND is ridiculously easy to set up?

  10. From what I have read so far, I guess I will need your help here to give a good recommendation. I have tried to narrow down my choices to Asus AC88U and NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 because I really want to make sure I am getting the best router this time around. Thanks

  11. I spend most hours working on eBay and other sites that involve uploading photos, while my son enjoys playing on xbox as well as streaming Netflix. Ours is a Wi-Fi set up that is approx. 1/2 mile away to the tower. Currently we have issues with it dropping. Could you recommend the best router I could use; as long as it is not going to be breaking my wallet, money should not be a challenge. I just need a very reliable one.

  12. Please what’s your thought about the Dlink DIR-885 (AC3150-dualband)? Specs of the router have been really wonderful but I have not been able to get an actual review that will talk more about its range and throughput. I actually need a router that will perform well from my new building basement and reach the second floor. Thanks

  13. This is a very detailed review! I want to get a router for my new apartment as I will likely be moving out to the apartment soon. I only need a very good router that will allow me great streaming experience on Netflix and also for gaming on my PlayStation 4.1. Please, which do you suggest I go for among all these?

  14. Thanks for this update. It’s really informative. But I am kind of skeptical and a bit confused on making the right decision. Are all these routers reviewed here compatible with a Time machine that is built into the MacOS? I will so much appreciate a quick response to this. Thanks

  15. Thanks for putting this up, it will surely be of help to me soon as I will be going to get a Wi-Fi router soon. I wouldn’t want to buy a cheap router that I will latter have to regret buying and I won’t want to overpay for anyone either. So this review has really helped. I’m looking to get the TP-LINK Archer C7.

  16. I’ve been looking for a review of this nature. I have always been awfully confused about getting the right and reliable Wi-Fi router for my new office. I think this review has really helped and influenced my decision. The features of the ASUS RT-AC3200 interest me more. Thanks for this timely update.

  17. Thanks so much for the detailed review. I am presently held up in the midst of so many great choices right now; but it’s a good one. But I will like if you could help me with this; I live in an old 3 story brick/plaster walls house. But of course, with several modern tech–tablets/desktops; Wi-Fi security cameras; Apple TV; phones; NAS; wireless printers; lights; thermostats; etc.
Please, which router can I go for putting special interest in range and girth, speed could be secondary?

  18. I completely fell in love with the D-Link AC3200. It has completely changed my story about routers for the last few weeks I have been using it. Perfect long range router with awesome overall performance and speed. I just love it and I warmly recommend it to everyone to give it a test.

  19. For the moment, my concern is a reliable router because in my house, I have a PS 4 upstairs, 3 smart Tvs, two 2.4 Ghz phones and 2 laptops. The number of devices would certainly grow overtime and at some points, I also stream Netflix. Please which among these two routers can I go for; Asus AC88U or NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900. Your recommendation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  20. Interesting! I really commend your effort to put this together. Please I want to know which router among all these has the best long range in 2.4Ghz, especially out of line and site through walls? I wouldn’t want to use an extender and I presently don’t have an ac device. Thanks

  21. Any reason why the Linksys WRT32X was left out? It’s new but so is the update to this article. Have you seen the reviews for this router?

  22. If I have my Xbox as the only wired connection to my router, then will a gaming router provide any benefits to playing? Looking for a router that has excellent QOS options and can handle multiple wireless devices along with one wired Xbox.
