Reviews of the Best Handheld shower heads

#1 Ana Bath SS5450CBN

Ana-Bath SS5450CBN is our top pick. It can be a double shower, which will double the effectiveness of your shower. Two massaging showers working on your stiff muscles at the same time, or two saturating sprays helping you rinse double quick will make your shower much more luxurious and enjoyable.

Features for this combination handheld and wall mount showerhead include (Pros):

  • Both showerheads are five inches across, allowing maximum coverage during showering. No one will complain that this showerhead is stingy.
  • Both showerheads can be on at the same time, or one at a time.
  • Both showerheads can be angled so two persons can shower at the same time.
  • There are three spray options: saturating, massaging and bubble spray. Many different combinations of these can be created with one showerhead on one spray option and the other on something else.
  • There are three spray options: saturating, massaging and bubble spray. Many different combinations of these can be created with one showerhead on one spray option and the other on something else.
  • A flow rate of 2.31 GPM will make for terrific water pressure for a refreshing, rejuvenating experience.
  • There are water restrictors to save water in the installation package, but they are easy to remove and there are instructions for their removal if water saving is not an issue.
  • Hose length is a generous five feet or 60 inches, long enough to cover most shower stalls and rinse the dog easily. The hose is stainless steel, durable and functional.
  • The Ana-Bath shower head is made of sturdy plastic, with some heft in your hand. It will not rust.
  • The core of the diverter is made of brass and the rest is plastic.
  • The hose is stainless steel with two brass nuts at both ends. This one will not crack and start leaking.
  • TPR, a kind of soft rubber, is used in the gray handle for its self-cleaning function. This means no more soaking the shower head yearly or monthly to make sure enough water comes through.
  • The finish is a sophisticated brushed nickel. A polished chrome finish is also available.
  • A wrench is needed for installation. It comes with Teflon tape but only a small amount is included, so you may want to pick up your own.

Cons:

  • There is no pause feature, meaning you can’t turn both showers heads off while you lather up.
  • If you have a small shower area, measuring first would be a good idea.
  • The long hose can get in the way of a behind-the-shower head storage system, so you may want to find a different storage system when you install this combination shower head system.

#2 Delta Faucet 75700

My RUNNER-UP pick for a hand shower is the Delta Faucet 75700 Universal Showering Components 7-Setting Handshower in Chrome. This hand shower adds Delta quality to the faucet’s features.

The faucet has these features (Pros):

  • The shower arm mount allows for hands-free showering. There is a ball socket that allows the showerhead to be tilted to different angles to allow showering by tall or short individuals.
  • It has seven different spray options, so everyone can find a favorite.
  • Settings include fast, slow and full massage and full, fine, champagne, and energy-saving spray.
  • This will be fun to play with and sure to have a setting that pleases everyone.
  • 2.5 GPM flow rate provides a steady flow of water with comfortable pressure.
  • A pause feature allows most of the water flow to be blocked off to allow for easy shampooing or lathering up. Plumbing rules won’t allow complete shut off as too much pressure backs up and that can damage the plumbing.
  • Delta Faucet 75700 is contemporary-styled, with an easy-to-grip non-slip handle. The level that changes spray options is easy-to-turn, even with soapy hands.
  • This hand shower is lightweight and easy to maneuver. It is made of plastic.
  • The flexible hose is 72 inches, extra long and tangle free to allow ease of use. There is plenty of hosen to rinse down your shower stall or rinse your pet.
  • Energy efficiency hose has a vacuum breaker to decrease water usage and lower the water bill.
  • An anti-clog nozzle means a simple rub on the nozzle removes mineral build-up. No more soaking the showerhead to remove build up that slows down shower flow.
  • Delta durability means an internal waterway and double check valve in the hand shower ensures performance and durability.
  • Beautiful and functional chrome finish fits most decors.
  • The showerhead is easy to install, although a wrench or pliers are required. Threading tape is not included.

Cons:

  • The plastic connection and hose are likely to crack and leak over time and with heavy use.
  • This faucet is compatible with aftermarket stainless steel connections and hoses, so malfunctioning connections and hoses can be replaced with better performing options.

#3 Delta 58471-PK

An exciting choice is the Delta 58471-PK H2OKinetic In2ition 4-Setting Two-in-One Handshower and Showerhead in Chrome. This showerhead has a removable handshower that fits into the wall-mounted showerhead.

Delta has introduced new technology: H2Okinetic. This technology “sculpts” the water into a wave pattern.

There is an internal system that controls the speed, movement, and droplet size of the water. This system creates the feeling of more water than a standard shower flowing at the same rate. Because the water is moving in different ways, it feels like more.

This creates a warmer, drenching shower experience that is indulgent and fun. I think everyone is going to like this technology.

The features for this shower include (Pros):

  • An integrated hand shower that fits securely into the shower head when you’re not using the hand shower. An all-in-one option that will save space and confusion.
  • Spray settings include H2Okinetic, massage, H2Okinetic with massage and pause.
  • The showerhead mounts to a shower arm that is not included: you have to buy your own or have one already there to install this shower head.
  • This shower has a pause feature on both the hand shower and the showerhead, so you can turn off one or both. The water does not turn all the way off, a plumbing safety feature to keep pressure from building up in your water pipes.
  • The pause feature promotes water conservation as well as ease in shampooing or lathering up.
  • The handheld shower has a 60-inch stretchable metal hose, not a plastic hose. Metal is more durable in the situation and less likely to develop cracks and leaks.

#4 Hansgrohe 04072000 Croma C 100 3-Jet Hand Shower

If you are looking for German engineering in a hand held shower, the Hansgrohe 04072000 Croma C 100 3-Jet Hand Shower in Chrome could be the showerhead for you. This is a sturdy, usable showerhead. Interestingly, the hose and showerhead mounting equipment are not included, so be sure to order those at the same time if you need them.

The Hansgrohe showerhead has these features:

  • Three spray modes: full spray, an invigorating whirl-air massage, and an intense turbo spray described as a soothing, warm rain shower.
  • Spray face is four inches, which makes for a wide area of coverage while showering. This is not a stingy shower.
  • The showerhead has 75 no-clog spray channels featuring QuickClean technology, which is a fast anti-limescale function, allowing residues to be wiped away. No more soaking the showerhead yearly or monthly to remove build up.
  • Good flow, allowing for ease in rinsing. This is not a stingy shower.
  • The Hansgrohe faucet is ceramic and plastic, engineered for durability and ease of use. This faucet is a perfect balance of strength, with just enough weight to make it last and just enough efficiency in choosing materials to make it lightweight and ergonomic.
  • The finish is shiny chrome.
  • This shower is full of German engineering. I believe it is actually made in the U.S. in a factory owned by the German manufacturer, but years of German engineering went into its development.

#5 Delta Faucet 51521-WHB

Delta’s Faucet 51521-WHB Universal Showering Components with Slide Bar Hand Shower in White is useful for accessibility remodeling (handicapped accessibility). It is easily adjusted and has an on/off function on the sprayer useful for persons in a chair.

This faucet has these features that make it perfect for someone who needs an easy-to-use, basic handheld showerhead:

  • A 28-inch wall bar with adjustable mount. This is not a grab bar or safety bar and should not be used as one, but it is convenient. The wall bar is metal but the end points are plastic.
  • Classic full spray with a push button to turn it off while shampooing or lathering. The water continues to trickle out, just not at full force, to avoid plumbing disasters and to remind you the shower is still on.
  • The showerhead has Rub Clean Nozzles to avoid having to soak the showerhead yearly or monthly.
  • This showerhead is made of plastic but seems very durable. Some complain of cracking and leaks after a period of time of usage.
  • The handheld has a 70-inch flexible hose, long enough to reach where you need to reach in a chair when washing the dog, or scrubbing children.
  • The showerhead has an internal dual check valve to assure continuous delivery of water.
  • This showerhead is white to fit your decorating needs.
  • You do need to purchase a supply elbow, shower arm diverter, or diverter tub spout to complete installation.

*We’ve Omitted 2 of the showers previously reviewed because of the few negative reviews they received on Amazon.

What is a hand held shower head?

A hand held shower head is mounted on a bracket and has a hose attached that allows the shower head to be moved to where you need it. There is a bracket that allows the shower head to be returned to shower height so it can be used as a regular shower head.

Some hand held shower head combination packages include both a hand mount and a wall mount unit, with a diverter allowing the user to switch between the two. Some diverters allow both the hand held and the wall mounted shower heads to be used at the same time.

Advantages of Handheld Shower Heads

The advantages of a handheld shower head are so great that I would not consider living without one for any length of time. I NEED the flexibility of a moving showerhead and strongly miss mine if I am in a hotel or guest room where they haven’t joined the 21st century and installed a handheld showerhead.

These are just a few of the reasons to install one if you don’t already have one, or if yours doesn’t have some amazing features:

  • The massage feature. I really enjoy the massage feature. Sometimes I use it to help me wake up, and other times I use it because I have a sore muscle or an ache from sitting too long. Some people don’t like the massage feature because it is too strong. They say it is painful. The solution to this is a massage feature that is adjustable, so you can make it weaker if you like it weaker and stronger if you like it stronger. Some days you have a sore back or a sore muscle somewhere else that if you massage it for a few minutes, it feels a lot better. I think a massage feature is important in a handheld showerhead, even if you don’t use it every day.
  • Saturating spray. I have thick hair, and it is hard to rinse if the spray is weak. A wider, heavier spray makes me feel a lot cleaner.
  • Dog owners like to use a handheld shower to wash their dog. Using a long, flexible hose with the warm water can make bathing your dog a lot easier. Rinsing your dog is a lot easier with a long, flexible hose and a saturating spray.
  • Cleaning your shower or tub. I like a clean shower or tub to clean me in.
  • Having a long, flexible hose to help clean the shower is a great thing. It makes rinsing so much easier (you don’t have to use a cup to rinse the corners of the tub). Being able to use a long, flexible hose to clean the shower or tub means even the kids will want to clean the tub.
  • Fun in the shower. The combination handheld and wall mounted shower heads are great for those times when you are not alone in the shower. You can angle the showerheads differently so each of you can have your own spray. This is much better than sharing the spray, which usually results in one of you freezing while the other one is under the warm water.
  • Alone in the shower. The combination handheld and wall mounted shower heads make for a spa-like experience. A good shower is truly a great thing. You can massage while you rinse, or rinse while you massage. Or massage while you are in a rainforest shower, or whatever combination you like. Your shower could turn into a truly pleasurable event.
  • Bathing children. Rinsing your child’s hair can be tormenting. A long, flexible hose with warm water attached makes this a much easier thing. No more tears.

Factors to consider before purchasing handheld shower

Before buying a handheld shower head, you should consider each of these factors:

  1. How many installations can you handle? It is beyond frustrating to be in the middle of installing a new shower head and realize you don’t have the tools or the understanding to finish the job.
  2. Check to see what tools are needed, if all the necessary parts are included, and how complicated the installation instructions are before you buy.
  3. How much room do you have? If you have a small shower or tub enclosure, you may not have room for a dual head and you should consider a single head instead.
  4. The height of the room is important because you need to have enough room to hang the handheld shower. If the height of the installed shower makes it so the shower is pointed too low, you should choose a different model.
  5. What storage is available in your shower area? If you use a rack that hangs off the shower head for storage, this may present a problem when you add a long hose. I vote for changing your storage, but it is a factor to consider.
  6. What features do you like? I like massage and full spray, and I always use the pause feature. Most of us have a favorite we put the shower on for everyday use and use the extra features rarely.
  7. If you are sharing the shower, you need to please everyone who will use it regularly.
  8. How heavy will the use be? If the handheld shower is to be used by a child, heavy duty features just became a lot more important. If you make sure the connectors and hose are heavy duty, your new handheld shower will last.
  9. Will you be rinsing a dog or dealing with children with long hair and rotten attitudes toward bathing? Making sure the hose is flexible and long enough to do what you need it to do is important.
